Quick (2011) ☆☆(2/4) : Slow delivery of bombs, actions, and cheap gags

The most interesting part of “Quick”, the latest South Korean action movie, is the behind-the-scene footage shown to us at the end credit. I understood they tried to make good action scenes, I saw how much the stunt men and … Continue reading

Poongsan (2011) ☆☆1/2(2.5/4) : A Man between North and South

Some movies depend on very preposterous premise you cannot believe easily, and “Poongsan”, one of the latest South Korean movies, is a good case. How can he cross the border between South Korea and North Korea so easily? How can … Continue reading

Super 8 (2011) ☆☆☆(3/4) : A respectful homage to Spielberg films with nostalgia

J.J. Abrams’ new movie “Super 8” turns out to be not as good as what it can be, but it is as good as what it sincerely wants to be, and I liked that. As a respectful homage with nostalgia … Continue reading

Fresh (1994) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : A dangerous game between him and his world

In the middle of Boaz Yakin’s “Fresh”(1994), there is the crucial scene that gives us the insight into its hero’s plan. While playing chess with his father, he learns a lesson. And then, he applies its logic to the real … Continue reading

Black Swan (2010) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : A ballerina under Influence

The Yellow Sea (2010) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : Chased into the chaos and mayhems

If you were left confused after watching “Inception” despite constant reminders and explanations in the story, I bet you will be also confused, or more confused, after watching Na Hong-jin’s ambitious noir thriller “The Yellow Sea”. It does not … Continue reading

Buried (2010) ☆☆☆1/2 : A sheer claustrophobic terror under the ground

“To be buried while alive is, beyond question, the most terrific of these extremes which has ever fallen to the lot of mere mortality.” -From Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Premature Burial”   When I saw several equipments devised for saving … Continue reading

Bedevilled (2010) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : There will be revenge

Revenge is served raw and simple in “Bedevilled”(2010). The movie delivers exactly what it promises to us, but that is not for free. There are barbarous scenes that make you wince, and then there are bloody scenes that make you … Continue reading

Inception (2010) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : Descent into the labyrinth of dreams

Surprisingly to me, “Inception” is a small movie when viewed objectively from the outside. The story is not ground-breaking; it’s in a very familiar area where “Matrix” and other movies about the mind-bending world belong. The movie stays inside its settings and rules, and sticks to them even at the finale. Continue reading

Moss (2010) ☆☆(2/4) : A rural mystery – more than 2.5hr

After so much hoopla before its release, “Moss”, a much-anticipated Korean thriller of 2010, turns out to be very, very disappointing in almost every way you can imagine due to the fatally misguided direction. It is lazy, incompetent, and, above all, not compelling at all. Despite some good basic elements of a thriller in the screenplay, it is more close to the ennui of the bright summer days in a country town, and, boy, the running time is more than 2.5 hours even if you exclude the end credit. Continue reading
