Under the Silver Lake (2018) ☆☆(2/4): A messy and insipid neo-noir piece
David Robert Mitchell’s second feature film “Under the Silver Lake” bored me a lot. While I surely understand that it tries be a quirky neo-noir film as juggling so many different things together during its 139-minute running time, this messy … Continue reading
Diamantino (2018) ☆☆☆(3/4): A whimsical mixed bag
Portuguese film “Diamantino”, which won the Grand Prize when it was shown in the International Critics’ Week section at the Cannes Film Festival early in this year, is a whimsical mixed bag which will alternatively baffle and amuse you. Although … Continue reading
Cold Case Hammarskjöld (2019) ☆☆☆(3/4): A compelling conspiracy investigation
Danish documentary film “Cold Case Hammarskjöld”, which received the World Cinema Documentary Directing Award when it was shown at the Sundance Film Festival early in this year, is about a potentially dubious but undeniably compelling conspiracy investigation. While I still … Continue reading
Hail, Caesar! (2016) ☆☆☆(3/4): There is no business like movie business
The Coen brothers have never been boring throughout their long, illustrious career. For instance, after a gripping cold-blooded neo-noir thriller in their terrific debut film “Blood Simple” (1985), they went all the way for cheerful wackiness in “Raising Arizona” (1987), … Continue reading
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) ☆☆☆(3/4) : A fish in the new water
While you may have to watch previous Marvel Comics movies before watching it, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is a surprisingly entertaining entry packed with fun, thrill, and a considerable dose of intrigue, and that was good enough for me … Continue reading
The Cabin in the Woods (2011) ☆☆☆(3/4): It’s not your typical cabin in horror movie
For enjoying “The Cabin in the Woods” as much as possible, I advise you to keep yourself away from any information about it before watching it. Although one main surprise in its premise is easily guessed from the beginning, there … Continue reading
The China Syndrome (1979) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : It can happen – and we know that
While I heard the alarming reports keeping coming from the Fukushima I nuclear power plant, that unforgettably intense sequence from “The China Syndrome”(1979) immediately came to my mind. The earthquake occurs without warning. The power plant is automatically shut down. … Continue reading
The President’s Analyst (1967) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : The loneliest (and the most paranoidal) analyst in the world
While it is one or two steps behind “Dr. Strangelove”, “The President’s Analyst”(1967) is a very good black comedy sniggering at Cold War paranoid. Maybe it is not as ruthless as that great comedy, but the movie romps cheerfully on its subjects with a take-no-prisoner attitude. And during this loony joy ride, we eventually discover that the movie foretold something very accurate more than 40 years ago.
