Sunday League (2020) ☆☆(2/4): A tedious league of their own

Posted on October 15, 2022 by kaist455

South Korean independent film “Sunday League” tries a lot, but it did not amuse or move me much on the whole. As a sports comedy drama, it may intrigue you a bit with its sport of choice, but it handles … Continue reading →

Hustle (2022) ☆☆☆(3/4): A low-key sports drama starring Adam Sandler (No Kidding)

Posted on June 13, 2022 by kaist455

As many of you know, Adam Sandler is actually a good actor who can be quite serious and compelling whenever he gets a chance for that. In Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch Drunk Love” (2002), he got the first opportunity for … Continue reading →

Crush (2022) ☆☆☆(3/4): A likable high school queer comedy film

Posted on May 3, 2022 by kaist455

“Crush” reminds me of how things seem to have changed these days. As a mainstream American high school queer comedy film, it proudly and cheerfully depicts its main characters’ sexuality without any shame or hesitation, and I appreciate that a … Continue reading →

The Novice (2021) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4): Driven to compete all the way

Posted on December 20, 2021 by kaist455

“The Novice” is a little but undeniably intense character drama which will make you wince more than once for good reasons. As palpably and disturbingly conveying to us its very competitive heroine’s physical and psychological journey, the movie makes us … Continue reading →

King Richard (2021) ☆☆☆(3/4): A father behind two daughters

Posted on November 30, 2021 by kaist455

“King Richard” is your average feel-good drama film which mostly plays safe from the beginning to the end. Right from when I went through its first few minutes, I could clearly discern what I was going to get, and the … Continue reading →

Fighter (2020) ☆☆☆(3/4): You will cheer for this boxer girl

Posted on March 21, 2021 by kaist455

South Korean independent film “Fighter” is atypical in its seemingly conventional sports drama. When it starts the story along with its struggling underdog heroine full of pluck and determination, it looks rather predictable on the surface, but then it deliberately … Continue reading →

Russian Penguins (2019) ☆☆☆(3/4): A risky sports business in Russia

Posted on August 9, 2020 by kaist455

Documentary film “Russian Penguins” is as absurd as its very title suggests. Although I really have no idea on how much of the testaments from the interviewees in the documentary is actually true, the documentary is still engaging as cheerfully … Continue reading →

Baseball Girl (2019) ☆☆☆(3/4): You will definitely root for her

Posted on June 21, 2020 by kaist455

I love it when I come to root for a movie character a lot more than expected, and South Korean film “Baseball Girl” is one of such wonderful examples. Like a number of certain unforgettable movie heroines I encountered during … Continue reading →

The Phenom (2016) ☆☆☆(3/4): A baseball pitcher with issues

Posted on September 9, 2019 by kaist455

“The Phenom” is a somber and restrained sports drama which focuses more on psychological elements than physical ones. Mainly revolving around one talented but troubled rookie baseball player, the movie calmly and tentatively examines his longtime emotional issues, and we … Continue reading →

Creed II (2018) ☆☆☆(3/4): Fathers and sons with issue

Posted on February 22, 2019 by kaist455

“Creed II” is a safe sequel mostly making predictable moves inside its genre conventions. Although it is understandably less refreshing and surprising compared to what was magnificently achieved in its 2015 predecessor, the movie is still fairly entertaining mainly thanks … Continue reading →
