True Grit (2010) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : After all, it’s her story
How unpredictable the Coen brothers are – I have been always amused by their unpredictability in their career. When we became a little bit disappointed with playfully heartless puppet plays in their lesser movies for a while, they suddenly ambushed … Continue reading
The Dresser (1983) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : About one backstage relationship
It is always difficult to put a play on the stage. Actors and crews work hard amid many setbacks that can happen on and behind the stage. If they are lucky, they will survive today’s performance with descending curtain and … Continue reading
I Am Love (2009) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : When she discovers her desire to be happy
“I Am Love” tells us the story we have heard countless times from many tales – from literature books to your average trashy soap drama on TV. After having been living as someone more or less than a component of … Continue reading
Winter’s Bone (2010) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : Her desperate determination in cold, harsh world
Although its story is driven by a mystery surrounding certain missing person, the mystery only serves as a trigger for something far more than itself in “Winter’s Bone”. While we follow its heroine’s plight and wait for the answer to … Continue reading
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) ☆☆☆(3/4) : That baffling world of death and reincarnation
Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s latest movie “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” scored some points from me at the beginning. After the enigmatic opening sequence featuring a cow and the jungle shrouded in strange atmosphere, the following sequence with a … Continue reading

The American (2010) ☆☆☆(3/4) : A professional who came in from the cold
When “The American” was scheduled to be released in next week in South Korea(the release is recently postponed to the last week of this December, by the way), the trailer was shown at the screening room and the leaflets were … Continue reading
The Social Network (2010) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : An energetic story about Facebook
“The Social Network” is simply riveting. I have no idea about how much of its story is fictional, but, as the fiction, the movie is smooth, fast, clever, and entertaining as the drama of a young man who finds himself … Continue reading
The Unjust (2010) ☆☆☆(3/4) : Mean System
There is one scene that strikes me hard in the middle of “The Unjust”. It is one of many unjust things happening on the screen, but none of two main characters who occupy that scene is someone we are … Continue reading

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010) ☆☆1/2(2.5/4) : Gordon Gekko Strikes Back?
Despite considerable expectation before its release, Oliver Stone’s “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” is a little disappointing. It criticizes the current situation more or less than it chronicles the recent financial crisis at Wall Street. The movie begins to lose … Continue reading
Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) ☆☆1/2(2.5/4) : So, where is The Man behind the Car?
Francis Ford Coppola’s ambitious movie “Tucker: The Man and His Dream”(1988) curiously reminds me of nice-and-clean biography sets for elementary school students I used to read during my childhood years. In those books, there were always good-looking pictures depicting what great men and women did in their lifetime whenever I turned each page, and, of course, they were accompanied by the story written for them. From these books, I learned how great their achievements were, but I do not think I learned anything substantial about them as the human beings from the story. Of course, those books were well-intentioned for me and other kids, and I liked them. The problem is, they were hollow, and they did not leave me any big impression except those nice pictures.
