Lourdes (2009) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : Religion, People, and ‘Miracle’

I have never been to Lourdes, one small town near the Pyrenees in southwestern France, but, considering what I saw from Jessica Hausner’s film “Lourdes”, I think Lourdes looks like a nice place to visit. The hotel shown in the … Continue reading

The Tree of Life (2011) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4) : From the vast universe to one small life

“The Tree of Life”, Terrence Malick’s ambitious new film, is a dazzling kaleidoscopic panorama rare to watch. Sometimes it seems ponderous, and sometimes it feels bloated, but it is an overwhelming visual feast to be remembered and discussed. I cannot … Continue reading

Silenced (2011) ☆☆☆(3/4) : It was very, very unfair to these molested kids

You will be aghast at what you will see in South Korean film “Silenced”, an angry movie about the horrid truth hidden beneath one school for the deaf kids. When the end credit rolls on the screen, you will be … Continue reading

Leaves of Grass (2009) ☆☆☆(3/4) : Crime and Philosophy – and also Marijuana

As far as I know, “a mixed bad” is a negative expression, but I think that is an appropriately positive one in case of “Leaves of Grass”(2009) for its seemingly disjointed combination of crime story and philosophy. The movie throws … Continue reading

Santa Sangre (1989) ☆☆☆☆(4/4) : He’s his mother’s right arm – and also her left arm

I have a small childhood memory indirectly associated with Alejandro Jodorowsky’s “Santa Sangre”(1989). I remember well about how it drew the attention of people when it was introduced in South Korea in 1994. One tagline was simple brutal honesty I … Continue reading

Moss (2010) ☆☆(2/4) : A rural mystery – more than 2.5hr

After so much hoopla before its release, “Moss”, a much-anticipated Korean thriller of 2010, turns out to be very, very disappointing in almost every way you can imagine due to the fatally misguided direction. It is lazy, incompetent, and, above all, not compelling at all. Despite some good basic elements of a thriller in the screenplay, it is more close to the ennui of the bright summer days in a country town, and, boy, the running time is more than 2.5 hours even if you exclude the end credit.
