April and the Extraordinary World (2015) ☆☆☆(3/4): Alternative steampunk world
French animation feature film “April and the Extraordinary World” gives us a literally extraordinary world to admire and appreciate. Although its story is not as bountiful as its visual pleasures on the screen, its imaginary world is interesting and delightful … Continue reading
The Secret Life of Pets (2016) ☆☆☆(3/4): The Adventure of NYC pets
I have often complained about the recent homogenization of numerous Hollywood animation feature films during these years. They all look certainly well-made on the surface thanks to the rapid industrial development and expansion of digital animation since Pixar Animation Studio … Continue reading
Finding Dory (2016) ☆☆☆(3/4): Another marine family adventure
As the screening of “Finding Dory” began during last evening, I could not help but become nostalgic about the time when I watched its predecessor “Finding Nemo” (2003), one of the best animation feature films from Pixar Animation Studios. Although … Continue reading
Zootopia (2016) ☆☆☆(3/4) : A rookie bunny officer’s first case
While it is somehow released earlier outside US, new Disney digital animation feature film “Zootopia” is better than I expected. It is colorful and spunky with its amusing variation of buddy cop movie conventions, and there are enough funny, exciting … Continue reading
Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016) ☆☆☆(3/4): There will be more pandas
“Kung Fu Panda 3”, the third entry of the popular animated film franchise from Dreamwork, faithfully follows its plot formula which has been established through its two predecessors. Again, its bumbling hero must rise to the challenge when another big … Continue reading
Anomalisa (2015) ☆☆☆1/2(3.5/4): A quirky stop-motion animation a la Charlie Kaufman
“Anomalisa” is a stop-motion animated film from Charlie Kaufman, and this is certainly another odd, fascinating work from a talented writer/director who wrote the screenplays for “Being John Malkovich” (1999), “Adaptation.” (2002), “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004), and … Continue reading
Boy & the World (2013) ☆☆☆(3/4): Simple but Marvelous
Brazilian animated feature film “Boy & the World” looks quite simple at first, but its kaleidoscopic presentation of colors and lines and shapes on the screen is something to behold. I was involved in its numerous marvelous visual moments, and … Continue reading
When Marnie Was There (2014) ☆☆☆(3/4): The last Ghibli animation, probably
Watching Japanese animated feature film “When Marnie Was There” is a bittersweet experience because this may be the last work from Studio Ghibli, which has been in a ‘temporary’ hiatus period since “When Marnie Was There” was released in Japan … Continue reading

The Good Dinosaur (2015) ☆☆1/2(2.5/4) : My Boy Spot
While it is a slick animated feature film on the technical level, “The Good Dinosaur” is not wholly satisfying in terms of story and characters, and that is a surprise considering that it is made by none other than Pixar … Continue reading

The Peanuts Movie (2015) ☆☆☆(3/4): You’re still a good man, Charlie Brown
Charlie Brown and his gangs in late Charles M. Schulz’s classic newspaper comic strip “Peanuts” have been cultural icons around the world since when it was started in 1950. Like many of you, I came to encounter these simple, broad, … Continue reading
